Position Summary

The Enterprise Chief Learning Officer (CLO) serves as the senior executive responsible for establishing and leading MUSC's enterprise learning, leadership development, and organizational capability strategy. As an inaugural executive reporting to the Enterprise Chief People Officer, the CLO will create and execute a unified vision for workforce learning that advances MUSC's mission of preserving and optimizing human life through excellence in education, research, and patient care.

Working collaboratively with executive, clinical, academic, research, and operational leaders across the enterprise, the CLO will develop an integrated learning ecosystem that prepares leaders, faculty, clinicians, researchers, staff, and learners to meet the evolving demands of healthcare, higher education, and scientific discovery. The CLO will align enterprise learning and leadership development with organizational strategy, workforce capability, digital transformation, clinical excellence, academic achievement, research innovation, patient safety, and organizational culture while fostering a continuous learning environment that strengthens engagement, succession readiness, and organizational performance across MUSC.

The CLO will champion evidence-based learning strategies, leverage emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and digital learning platforms, and establish measurable outcomes that demonstrate the impact of learning investments on workforce capability, leadership effectiveness, academic excellence, research advancement, operational performance, and patient outcomes.

As an inaugural executive leader, the CLO will have the unique opportunity to establish the vision, governance, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships that define enterprise learning and leadership development across MUSC, creating a lasting foundation for workforce excellence and organizational success. Responsibilities

Enterprise Learning Strategy

• Collaborate with University, Health System, Physician Practice Plan, and Research leaders to ensure enterprise learning strategies support the unique workforce, educational, and operational needs of each MUSC mission area while advancing a unified organizational culture.

• Develop and execute a multi-year enterprise learning strategy aligned with organizational priorities, workforce planning, strategic growth, and digital transformation.

• Establish enterprise learning governance, competency frameworks, and standardized curricula across clinical, academic, research, and administrative functions.

• Partner with executive leadership to identify capability gaps and future workforce needs.

Organizational Capability & Culture

• Build enterprise capability frameworks aligned with MUSC's strategic priorities.

• Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.

• Partner with HR Business Partners to strengthen organizational effectiveness and employee engagement.

• Advance organizational capability to support strategic transformation and future models of care.

Leadership Development

• Partner with HR Business Partners and executive leadership to design development strategies that strengthen leadership pipelines for physicians, nurses, researchers, and operational leaders.

• Develop enterprise leadership programs that prepare high-potential talent for expanded leadership responsibilities.

• Align leadership development curricula with enterprise succession planning priorities and future organizational capability needs.

• Support executive talent reviews by identifying learning pathways that accelerate leadership readiness for critical roles.

• Create executive coaching and leadership assessment programs for senior leaders.

• Design enterprise talent & succession planning strategies that enable HR Business Partners and executive leadership to implement a robust cycle for talent planning.

• Champion change management, organizational effectiveness, coaching, and culture initiatives.

• Manage enterprise learning budget, vendor relationships, and strategic partnerships.

• Present learning strategy and outcomes to executive leadership and governance committees.

Workforce Development

• Develop enterprise knowledge management strategies that capture, share, and sustain organizational expertise and best practices.

• Promote knowledge sharing across clinical, academic, research, and operational teams to accelerate innovation and improve organizational performance.

• Partner with Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, Nursing Professional Development, the MUSC colleges, affiliated academic programs, and research leadership to create an integrated enterprise learning strategy.

• Advance clinical competencies, patient safety, quality improvement, and regulatory readiness.

• Oversee enterprise onboarding, career pathways, and workforce development initiatives to accelerate readiness and reduce time-to-productivity.

• Promote lifelong learning across faculty, clinicians, researchers, students, residents, fellows, staff, and leaders throughout the MUSC enterprise.

Learning Technology & Innovation

• Provide executive oversight for LMS, digital learning ecosystem, simulation, AI-enabled learning, and knowledge management.

• Develop enterprise learning analytics dashboards demonstrating ROI and organizational impact.

• Develop learning strategies supporting artificial intelligence, digital health, data literacy, and emerging technologies in close collaboration with the Office of Innovation and Office of Artificial Intelligence teams.

• Identify future workforce capabilities required to meet evolving healthcare delivery models.

• Partner with Information Technology, Corporate Information Solutions, and Digital Transformation to operationalize opportunities to accelerate workforce readiness.

Additional Job Description

Qualifications

Education

• Master’s degree in Organizational Development, Healthcare Administration, Education, or a related field required (Doctorate or clinical degree preferred).

Experience

• Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible executive leadership experience in enterprise learning, organizational development, talent development, leadership development, workforce transformation, or related disciplines within a large, complex healthcare organization, academic medical center, or similarly regulated environment.

• Experience leading enterprise organizational transformation initiatives.

• Experience supporting physician and executive leadership development.

• Experience implementing enterprise learning technologies and digital learning ecosystems preferred.

• Experience integrating learning strategy across clinical, academic, research, and administrative environments.

• Experience leading large-scale organizational change initiatives.

• Proven experience managing enterprise-wide Learning Management Systems (LMS) and modern digital learning tools.

• Deep understanding of adult learning theories, healthcare regulatory standards (Joint Commission, CMS), and hospital operations.

• Exceptional executive presence, communication skills, and the ability to influence cross-functional clinical and administrative teams.
